45 years since last combined class

Delta Senior Secondary class of 1972 was final one with students from Ladner and Tsawwassen

The last graduating class from Delta Senior Secondary comprised of students from both Ladner and Tsawwassen is having its 45th reunion next month.

The barbecue and barn dance is also a chance to recognize how the Ladner community welcomed the Tsawwassen students, said organizer Jennifer Leigh.

"One of the things I wanted to do with this grad reunion is to honour the fact we'd come in and basically Ladner had taken us in," she said.

The Tsawwassen students were shown much friendliness while going to school in Ladner, Leigh said.

"When you're thrown into classes all the time, you're doing things together, and start planning to do things after school ... there's not that much of a difference between us," she said. "We all sort of have a soft spot in our hearts for ... Delta secondary."

South Delta has undergone many changes from the early 1970s, said Kristin Crouch, another member of the class of '72.

"It's so different now.

There's been so much growth for one thing, as far as housing goes," she said.

Originally called South Delta Senior Secondary, Tsawwassen's high school opened its doors in September 1973, a time of huge population growth following the opening of the George Massey Tunnel years earlier.

The reunion party is set for Saturday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Roddick Barn on Westham Island.

Tickets to the reunion are $60 and available online through the Eventbrite website. Visit http://bit.ly/2xcqd3c to buy tickets.
