Carlene Lewall joined an impressive list of Deltans Friday night as she was named Citizen of the Year at the Delta Chamber of Commerce annual Hats of to Excellence gala.
"It's a nice honour and I really appreciate the support and recognition," Lewall said.
Lewall has been involved with Delta Gymnastics as a volunteer coach and administrator for 31 years. She has been a tireless advocate for the club and youth sports in the community.
In 2003, Lewall became chair of the Delta Spirit of B.C. Community Committee in the lead up to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver. The committee spearheaded several events and initiatives, including Delta Rivermania celebrating B.C.'s 150th anniversary and the founding of the Delta Sport Wall of Fame Society.
Lewall is also one of the founders of the Delta Sport Council, which supports all sport groups in Delta, and she serves as chair of KidSport Delta and Operation Red Nose Delta/ Richmond.
"It's a huge honour," Lewall said of the Citizen of the Year award.
Other winners were: . The Volunteer Service Award went to Steve Grant. Grant has spent the last 35 years, 17 in Delta, combining two of his favourite things - sports and coaching youth.
. The Rising Star Award went to Yvonne and David Anderson. Yvonne, a kinesiologist, and David, a strategist, created Santevia Pure Earth Water in January 2008.
. The Special Events and Tourism Award went to Curt Jantzen, who, along with a committee of the Delta Music Makers, founded Ladner Bandfest in 2004.
. The Delta Rotary Business Ethics Award went to South Shore Cycles for its promotion of bicycles for transportation.
. The Business of the Year Award went to West Coast Seeds, the small Ladner-based company that offers untreated seeds, specializing in certified organic and heirloom varieties.
