Delta Nature will host world renowned photographer Martin Gregus Jr. on Tuesday, Feb. 4 as he explains what it takes to get the perfect wildlife shot. Ambassadors-Tsawwassen Mills Toastmasters, an award-winning Toastmasters Club specializing in public speaking and leadership training, invites the public for an evening of fun and learning on Tuesday, Feb. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Tsawwassen Mills Training Room. The club guarantees it to be an evening of laughter and learning. The meeting is an open house and the theme is "Grab Bag.” Guests are always welcome. Coding with Scratch will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 5 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Ladner Pioneer Library. Kids can learn beginner coding concepts by creating a game with Scratch, a block-based programming language. Kids must be between the ages of nine and 12 and bring their own device.  No coding experience required.  Register at www.fvrl.ca.

Fun with Ozobots and Keva will be at the Tsawwassen Library on Friday, Feb. 7 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Using visual coding and Keva Planks, kids between the ages of eight and 10 can create a town for these little robots to roam and explore.  No previous experience necessary.  Register at www.fvrl.ca.

Ladner Pioneer Librarywill screen Plastic Planet from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9. It’s part of the library’s Sunday documentary series and will be streamed via FVRL’s Kanopy. Director Werner Boote takes viewers on a journey around the globe to reveal the far-flung reach of plastic. Admission is free but register online at www.fvrl.ca to ensure a spot.

Then consider joining a safe and supportive free group for bereaved adults to share with and listen to others in similar situations, and learn to navigate your grief process. Taoist tai chi is a set of gentle movements for people of all ages to improve health and balance. Beginning classes are held in Tsawwassen on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon at St. David’s Anglican Church and in Ladner on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Ladner United Church. Are you an adult living with cancer or serious illness and would like to relax body and mind? Then join the Centre for Supportive Care’s free Relaxation Circle where you will learn and practice relaxation techniques and experience soothing touch by volunteers, guided imagery and live music by a music therapist. The Tsawwassen Order of Old Bastards (TOOBs) has been quietly helping many South Delta groups and individuals since 1984. The club's fundraising is done through food services at community events such as the Ladner Bandfest and the Tsawwassen Sun Festival. Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue Station 8 Delta is looking for men and women to join the all-volunteer group dedicated to saving lives on the waters around Delta. The Canadian Lifeboat Institution is interviewing potential volunteers to serve as crew or support personnel for its Delta Lifeboat. Professional training is given in seamanship, navigation, medical, and search and rescue techniques. Contact John at 604-760-5218 for more information.

Mental Health Resiliency Support Group offered by Canadian Mental Health Association welcomes anyone who lives with a mental illness/mental health problem such as anxiety or depression. The group provides a safe environment to share your struggles and triumphs. Peer facilitators lead the group, provide support and educate on topics that help members to cope and move forward in an encouraging way. Group meets twice a month on Thursdays in the Ladner office. Have you attended a suicide bereavement support group and want to connect with others with similar experiences on an ongoing or occasional basis? Then join the Centre for Supportive Care’s drop-in, free Suicide Bereavement Alumni Group. Open to all communities. No commitment to attend every month. Bingo anyone? KinVillage Community Centre hosts the longest running and richest bingo in Tsawwassen. Play 11 games, including Bonanza, for only $7.50 every Wednesday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Before you play you can enjoy great food at reasonable prices in the on-site Buenos Dias Café.

A mix of gentle chair yoga, meditation and stretch is offered from 11 to 11:45 a.m. on Thursdays at KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen. $5 for members or $6 for non-members per class or purchase a 10 punch card for $40 or $60.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Giant Book Sale at KinVillage Community Centre on Jan. 30 (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.), Jan. 31 (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and Feb. 1 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.).

The Delta Skating Club is hosting the 2020 West Coast Challenge synchronized and adult skating competition on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The event will feature 26 entries including Delta Skating Club’s own Solar Ice and Fire Ice teams. The various sessions start at 10 a.m. and run through to 8:30 p.m. Admission is $5 with kids under six free.

Delta Gymnastics host a Trivia Night on Saturday, Feb. 29 at Ladner Community Centre. Come prepared to put your pop culture knowledge to the test while helping raise funds for new gym equipment. Lots of laughs, skill testing questions and prizes. Each table includes two pizzas. Bring your own appies. New and gently used toys of all shapes and sizes will be featured at the Hospice Cottage Charity Shoppe, 1521-56th St., Tsawwassen, the week of Jan. 27.

ARTS

TGIF 3 art show and sale runs until Feb. 2 at Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen. Gallery is open Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Two hundred enthusiastic people attended the show opening and 14 paintings found new homes. Gallery 1710 is beside the South Delta Recreation Centre.

The popular Sunday @3 Concert Series returns to Ladner United Church on Feb. 16 featuring Historic Melodies. New artists Donna Cullis (piano) and Howard Meadows (winds) will be engaging the audience with stories and songs of music in the forties. Their love of melody, lyrics and of improvised harmonies on the spot will make us realize as to why music matters so very much at each stage of our lives. Tickets are $10 available at the door.

Did you have fun playing in a band in high school? If so, dust off your instrument, contact Curt Jantzen, and then join the Delta Music Makers in Ladner on Tuesday evenings. The concert band is a fun group of adults who love to rehearse and play concerts in the community. Contact [email protected].

Loades of Music daytime concert band rehearses Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Saviour Lutheran Church, 4737-57th St., Ladner. Registration fee is $50 per year. This year the band would like to add players to its brass section that play either trumpet or trombone.
