Ham radio operators to take part in Field Day at North 40

Members of the Delta Amateur Radio Society will once again descend on the North 40 Dog Park in East Ladner to take part in the annual Field Day.

Members of the Delta Amateur Radio Society will once again descend on the North 40 Dog Park in East Ladner to take part in the annual Field Day.

Set for June 24 and 25, the purpose of the emergency preparedness exercise is to deploy and operate amateur radio equipment in a remote location independent of existing power and communication infrastructure.

Since its inception in 1933, Field Day has grown to involve over 35,000 amateur radio operators in North America. The operators, otherwise known as "hams," set up stations in remote locations using emergency power sources such as generators, batteries or solar power. Over a continuous 24-hour period, they attempt to make contact with as many other amateur stations as possible.

The Delta Amateur Radio Society will be establishing seven radio stations providing communications using voice, data and Morse code.

The public is welcome to visit the park during the exercise, which runs from 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 24 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 25.
