The Delta Hospital Foundation announced last week that Rachel Hislop-Hook has been selected as the 2015 winner of the Robert T. Reynolds Memorial Scholarship.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded in recognition of Robert T. Reynolds, a member of one of the Delta's pioneer families who devoted much of his time and energy towards obtaining a hospital for Delta.

Hislop-Hook was chosen for the scholarship, which is open to all Grade 12 students residing in Delta, for her impressive history of volunteerism, community service and a stellar academic and sporting record.

Since she was 13, Hislop-Hook has shown her dedication to helping others by volunteering with a long list of social service and community organizations as well as playing an active role in her school community, where she has received a large number of awards.

Her volunteering experience has included weekly visits to an assisted living and care home, helping community organizations provide meals in

Richmond and Downtown Vancouver, volunteering as a counsellor at summer camp and being a member of the Delta Youth Legislative Advisory Council.

Within her school community, she has been actively involved in the student government, tutored other students in math and has been a member of the Rotary Interact Club, where she also held the role of president in Grade 11.

Hislop-Hook hopes to combine her academic talents, passion for science and compassion for others in a career as a doctor. She has been accepted to the faculty of general science at UBC, with plans to apply to medical school in 2019.

"On behalf of the Reynolds family, the Delta Hospital Foundation is so pleased to recognise Rachel's achievements so far, and support her with her career ahead," said Veronica Carroll, executive director of the Delta Hospital Foundation. "Rachel's passion and energy for helping other people is remarkable and we can't wait to see where her studies take her."
