Jammin' at the Earthwise Market

Saturday's event will feature music, fresh berries and a salute to those prolific pollinators

The next Earthwise Market Day, set for this Saturday, promises to be a "Bee Jammin'" affair.

Held at the Earthwise Garden and Farm in Boundary Bay from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., it will feature a jam fest with day-long music as well as a celebration of local berry harvests and the bees that make them happen.

Part of the Tsawwassen Sun Festival MusicFest weekend, Bee Jammin' uses the beautiful setting of the Earthwise Garden as a unique venue to showcase the talents of local musicians.

The warm, rhythmic sounds of Kuimba and other local bands, including Aaron Copeland and JJ Sunshine, will be heard throughout the day. Visitors can even take part in the music by joining in the drum circle with Ron Stetling.

The Bee Jammin' Market Day is a family friendly event, sponsored by Vancity. Children's entertainer Indiana Johanna will lead a farm adventure tour for the under 12 set.

Parents will enjoy shopping for fresh organic produce from the Earthwise Farm Store and exploring the offerings of local artisans at the outdoor market. The market encourages new vendors offering organic and traditional products such as soaps and bath salts by Jolene's Natural Soaps and locally milled flour from the Flour Peddler.

When you need a break, treat yourself to a Shiatsu massage by The Birch Tree.

All of the Earthwise Market Days have a seasonal theme, and this one showcases local berries and the wide variety of products that can be made from them, from sweet jams to tart vinegars.

Learn how to extend the berry harvest with cooking demonstrations by Bernardin canning instructor Darlene Tanaka.

The event also highlights the role of bees in pollinating fruit crops and how gardeners can help out by providing pollen and nectar in their own gardens.

Learn more at the Feed the Bees display and look for bee-friendly products such as fresh local honey from Westham Island Apiary, honey-sweetened baked goodies by Sweet Thea and a selection of bee-friendly plants for your garden.

Illuminate Restorante will be serving pizza fresh from the Earthwise cobb oven using fresh herbs and vegetables from the Earthwise Farm. Pizza is available starting at noon, while quantities last.
