Ladner’s Connor McCormick will be competing at Action BMX this weekend in Surrey. The 18-year-old, who has been racing for more than a decade, says competing with pros will be a great experience.

Ladner's Connor McCormick will be one of the racers competing at this weekend's big BMX event at Action BMX Racing Club in Surrey.

He plans on racing in the BC BMX Premier Series and pro-am portions of the event, which also includes a Canada Cup component.

"I think it's going to be a great experience to race with all the pros. I haven't gotten to do that before," he says.

McCormick, 18, has been BMX racing since 2005 after being introduced to the sport by a friend and has "loved it ever since."

He's raced in Quebec, Alberta and Washington and has qualified for this year's World Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

McCormick's dad Jason is a vice president with Action BMX and one of the organizers of this weekend's event, which he expects will attract around 200 racers. It runs Saturday and Sunday.

"It's a new event and it's exciting for us to be hosting," he says.

He'll also have announcing duties as a colour commentator.

"It just gets nuts. It's a lot of fun," he notes.

Trevor Brown, a volunteer organizer for the event from Ladner, says he expects many competitors to come up from the U.S. and travel from around Canada to take part this weekend.

The racers travel at high speeds and clear huge jumps, he says.

Action BMX is located at 76th Avenue and 126th Street in Surrey. For more visit actionbmx.com.
