Probus to learn how to foil investment fraud

Public welcome at meeting next week in Tsawwassen

The South Delta Probus Club is tackling investment fraud at this month's meeting.

Many British Columbians have lost their life savings to risky or dangerous investments. If you encounter a sales pitch that sounds too good to be true, it's a warning sign the investment might be a scam.

A senior member of the B.C. Securities Commission will be at next Wednesday's meeting to share tips on what to look out for and how to avoid these scams.

The B.C. Securities Commission's InvestRight

- Be Fraud Aware seminar can help people develop critical thinking skills needed to protect themselves. It will cover:

How to spot a warning sign and understand the risks.

Where to call to report a scam.

What questions to ask.

Where to research or get a second opinion.

A Delta police officer will also be on hand to give a short presentation on what could potentially occur in Delta and to pass along some information about free services provided to local residents.

The meeting, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn, is free and open to all Delta residents.

Probus is a worldwide association of active retirees. The South Delta Probus Club offers its members the opportunity to learn from speakers on key issues of the day.

The association is nonpolitical and non-fundraising, and allows members to enjoy fellowship and activities that stimulate the mind and body.
