The air was abuzz with excitement when the 2024 Delta Reading Link Challenge took place on Wednesday, April 10.

Twenty-one teams assembled in North Delta’s Annieville Elementary – 12 schools from North Delta, five from Tsawwassen and four from Ladner.

After three rounds of questions, there was a tie among the teams.

Several sudden-death questions later, a winning team emerged. Congratulations to Southpointe Academy’s The Big Brains team members Anson, Cissy, Jasper, Maddie, Mia, and Oliver, along with Teacher (and PYP Literacy Coordinator) Heather Goode.

They will now go on to represent Delta at the Fraser Valley Regional Library Community Challenge and compete against teams across the Fraser Valley region.

The FVRL Reading Link Challenge is a yearly event that encourages reading as a fun and recreational activity for Grade 4 and 5 students of all reading abilities to engage in the sport of reading. Interested students form teams of six players. Teams are accountable for knowing the contents of six books, with each team player responsible for reading at least one title. Kids get the books (provided by the Fraser Valley Regional Library) in November and read until February.

After the Delta Challenge, the winning team competes in the FVRL Community Challenge with the hopes of representing FVRL at the regional Grand Challenge, where they’ll compete against teams from other public libraries for a chance to win the Reading Link Challenge Trophy.
