Grade 10 student Meaghan MacKenzie was recognized for her work at last month's Canada-Wide Science Fair in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

MacKenzie, who attends Southpointe Academy in Tsawwassen, won the Gold Medal - Excellence Award for her Intermediate Environment Division project. She received a $250 cash prize and was the recipient of $4,000 scholarship to the University of Western Ontario.

Her project, titled Fugitive Coal Dust Solutions in South Delta, was about finding the most effective mitigation to limit the fugitive coal dust from rail cars as well as stockpiles. She built her own wind tunnel and conducted tests using different methods.

She said attending the Canada-Wide Science Fair was an exceptional experience.

"Not only did I get to travel and discover a new city in Canada, I had the opportunity to collaborate and compete with young Canadian scientists from across the country," she said in a press release from her school.

It marked the third year in a row she has taken part in the national science fair.
