Stroke survivors stay active with weekly walks around mall

Tsawwassen Mills is not just a shopping destination, but as a group of stroke survivors from Delta is discovering, it's also a great place for a warm, Wednesday morning, window-shopping walk.

In a co-operative venture with the mall, the Stroke Recovery Association of B.C. and the March of Dimes, members of the Delta Stroke Recovery Society are now taking weekly walks along the mall's colourful corridors.

The Next Steps walking program is free to stroke survivors in the community - and others who would like to join them. Next Steps was developed by the GF Strong Rehab Hospital and has evolved into stroke-recovery activities throughout the province.

"We are most grateful that Tsawwassen Mills has opened its space to us," said Delta Stroke Recovery Society president Peter McTait. "The mall is a warm haven for our members on these chilly winter days."

The walks start at 8:30 a.m. from the Food Court at Entrance No. 5.

The Wednesday morning walk is in addition to the group's gathering every Tuesday at Tsawwassen United Church. The session there include exercises for the brain and body, after which members socialize at lunch. It begins at 11 a.m. New members are always welcome.
