South Park Elementary hosted its own version of Family Literacy Day last week.
Jan. 27 was Delta's Family Literacy Day, celebrated to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.
At 12: 10 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, everyone at the Tsawwassen school stopped whatever they were doing to "Drop Everything and Read."
There were readers in the halls, readers in the computer lab, even readers in the gym, including the school's own reading specialist, Bruce the wonder dog.
One class invited parents to bring and share their own favourite book, and also had younger siblings join them. Another class had grandparents reading to small groups.
Several classes read with their big buddy classes and at least four classes had hot chocolate as an added treat during their 15 minutes of fun.
Teacher-librarian Leslie Clancy said the school was filled with the noise of many readers reading at once.
"The atmosphere was inspiring, amazing," said Clancy. "With very little effort our Family Literacy event helped to build our school community, model the joy of reading and was a great success for all involved."
