The George Mackie Library has a number of special programs taking place over the next month:

As you travel through the intersection of 112th Street and 84th Avenue on the way to the stores at Nordel Centre and beyond, have you ever wondered why this area is called the Social Heart of North Delta? The Social Heart of North Delta…Then and Now will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Find out more about Nordel Centre, including the corner store that existed before the 7/11; the family who built and operated the Shell Gas Station in the 1950s; where the first Richardson Road School was located and its demise; and the small lumber mill where George Mackie Library is today.

Digital literacy is an important skill in today’s world. On the first Saturday of each month from 10 to 11 a.m., the library invites older adults to gain basic computer use knowledge with some common tools. Call the library to register for just one or multiple dates and become Tech Savvy Seniors. Space is limited to eight participants per session. 

Learn Microsoft Excel Basicsis on Saturday, Feb. 1. Future sessions include Surfing the Internet – Finding the information you need on Saturday, March 7 and Your Digital Library – what FVRL offers online on Saturday, April 4.

If you’re a teen between the ages of 12 and 19 and you love playing board games, come to the library on Tuesday, Jan. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. for a fun night of gaming and free pizza. Games and snacks provided by Imperial Hobbies. Teen Night: Pizza and Games happens every fourth Tuesday of the month. Upcoming dates are:  Feb. 25, March 24 and April 28.

Check out Preschool Science Storytime – Preschool Month Science Series on the last Friday of each month. On Friday, Jan. 31, Feb. 28, March 27 and April 24, from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., a different subject will be featured every month and will include a story (fiction or non-fiction), a group re-telling of the science aspects of the story and a hands-on activity. 

Preschool-aged children and their families can show off their inner builder at Build-N-Play on Monday, Feb. 3 and 24 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. There will be Magformers, Keva planks and more fun building tools. Registration is required for each date at www.fvrl.ca.

Kids between the ages of six and 12 are invited to learn how to play acoustic ukulele after school at Ukulele Fun 4 Kids on the first Monday of the month beginning Feb. 3 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Ukuleles will be provided but bring your own if you have one. Registration is required at www.fvrl.ca.
