Teen raises $1,600 for hospital

Julia Lowndes says proceeds to go towards ultrasound equipment

Tsawwassen teenager Julia Lowndes has raised over $1,600 for the Delta Hospital Foundation.

Lowndes asked for donations instead of gifts at her 15th birthday party held last month.

She's following the footsteps of her older sister Michelle who raised money five years ago for the foundation.

"I got really inspired towards that, too," said Lowndes, noting her fundraising efforts will go towards ultrasound equipment at the local hospital.

She also said she's interested in pursuing a career in radiation therapy.

Lowndes said she wanted to thank those who helped her raise the money and that she hoped others would consider donating to the foundation.

Her party, or Quinceañera, was last month, but Julia doesn't actually turn 15 until July 31.

Since she'll be away in Montreal on an audition for the L'École supérieure de ballet du Québec the family decided to have her party early.

A Quinceañera is a coming of age party in Latin culture, explained Donna Lowndes, Julia's mom.

She noted the family has some Brazilian heritage and also lived in the Dominican Republic for five years.
