If you've got a little spare time this month and you don't mind people thinking nice things about you, volunteer for the Ladner Pioneer May Days.
"Every year, people in our wonderful community are so generous with their time, and that's why we've been able to stage such a successful event every year," says Ladner May Days committee chairperson Jackey Zellweger. "But this year, we need even more volunteers because we're anticipating a larger than ever parade."
Forty volunteers are required for the parade alone, and at least another 35 are required for events and activities in Memorial Park.
May Days, a fixture in the community for more than a century, runs from May 24 to 26.
Volunteer tasks include setting up the stage, assisting crafters in unloading their vehicles, changing sponsor signs and helping at the petting zoo. People can volunteer for as little or as long as they desire, says Zellweger.
There are even opportunities for youth to get involved and there is always a large number of energetic volunteers from Delta Secondary.
"We welcome volunteers who are 12 years and older," says Zellweger.
"It's so great to witness the young ones getting involved - you can see the sense of accomplishment they feel."
May Days festivities begin on Friday evening with discounted midway rides for kids. Saturday is filled with a broad range of top-notch family entertainers and many free activities and entertainment for children.
Sunday activities kick off with a pancake breakfast followed at noon by the parade, featuring the May Queen float.
The theme of this year's event is Wild, Wild West, so volunteers in cowboy boots and Stetsons are more than encouraged.
