Beat the crowds by making your own long weekend

A long weekend is coming! A long weekend is coming!

Did you hear what I said? A long weekend is coming!

My mind has been wildly spinning trying to figure out what to do with three completely open days! Hurray! Yippee!

But... what to do with this sweet, precious time?

I decided a meeting was in order.

“Sit down!” I said to the husband. “We don’t want to fritter away the weekend! We have to make a plan!”

The husband nodded. This was not the first time he’d heard me speaking in exclamation marks.

“What are you thinking?” he wondered.

“I have no idea,” I said. “A little road trip?”

“Gas prices are insane,” the husband observed. “And the lineups at the border will be beyond nuts.”

I nodded.

“We could go camping!” I suggested.

“We don’t camp,” he said.

“You’re such a downer,” I said. “But you’re right. We don’t camp.”

I suggested we play tourists at home. We could head into the big city and wander the seawall. We could head to the valley and seek out antique shops and outdoor cafes. We could head to a nearby beach town and have a picnic on the sand.

“The crowds will be crazy wherever we go,” the downer observed.

I told him the last thing I wanted to do was spend the long weekend doing the run-of-the-mill. I did not want the highlights of the weekend to include three loads of laundry, two trips to the grocery store, a run to the dry cleaner and a drive to the mall to buy those new king-sized sheets we’ve been meaning to get.

“Sheets are so boring,” I said.

“What did you say?” asked the husband.

“I said sheets are boring,” I repeated.

He looked at me, confused.

“Tell you what,” I said after a minute. “Let’s get those sheets. And let’s pick up the dry cleaning.”

“That doesn’t sound like fun,” the husband said.

“It won’t be,” I said. “But we’ll take the following Monday off, and push our long weekend ahead a week when hardly anyone will be at the beach, the shops or the seawall.”

He nodded, beginning to get my logic.

And so, we decided, that’s just what we’ll do. A long weekend is coming, I silently cheered. It just doesn’t start tomorrow.
