Begin anew every day

The Bible is full of stories of "new beginnings." In the first pages we read of God who creates the heaven and earth and breathes new life. Then we begin again after the flood with Noah and his family. In our shared history, Abraham answers the invitation of God to go away from home and begin anew.

The Bible presents us with beginnings over and over again, until at the end a holy city comes down from heaven to earth, and its name is not Jerusalem, but New Jerusalem, for it is a place to begin, the start of what will be forever new built under God's rule and love.

All Saints Anglican Church This week we have been watching a new beginning unfold south of our border. For me, the question is not just about beginning anew, it is all about how we will live and choose to live in this new time. The words of the ancient prophet ring in our ears. The prophet asks, "With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high?" What shall I offer God, how shall I live? The answer becomes a clear and simple call, "He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6: 6,8) So let's begin anew every day - and all the days to come - to affirm our calling to do justice, to love kindness and walk humbly with God!
