Happy Birthday Canada!

Wednesday marks the country's 148th birthday and there are several community celebrations planned around Delta to mark the occasion. Events include:

The Canada Day party gets started in the morning outside the Delta Museum on Delta Street in Ladner.

Hosted by the Delta Museum and Archives Society, the free community event runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Highlights include the popular pancake breakfast, a Canadian flag cake, face painting, giant jenga and giant checkers. There will also be a scavenger hunt and even more crafts happening inside the museum. The Doghouse Band will be providing the tunes until close. Also, by popular demand, there will be a bouncy castle.

The museum is located at 4858 Delta St.

The Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club hosts its annual Canada Day celebration at Diefenbaker Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be free hotdogs and drinks, birthday cake, entertainment along with balloons and face painting for kids. Diefenbaker Park is located at the corner of 56th Street and 1st Avenue in Tsawwassen.

Kirkland House holds its annual Canada Day festivities from noon to 4 p.m. Performances throughout the day will include the Circle of Friends band, including a debut of Ray Hudson's song about the history of Kirkland House, Tina Hoell as well as the Delta Police Pipe Band. Peter Chipman will lead the singing of the national anthem at 1 p.m. There will be a concession available by Kirkland Scouts so guests can have a picnic at the event. There will be a nylon zoo for the kids along with demos from Delta Gymnastics as well as a yoga demo. The Harris Barn will be open as well.

Visitors can check out creative arts of yesterday like spinners and weavers inside Kirkland House.

The heritage house is located at 4140 Arthur Dr., Ladner.

Canada Day celebrations in North Delta will take place at Chalmers Park starting at 5:30 p.m. Highlights include children's crafts and games, barbecue food vendors, live music performances by Will Stroet The Backyard Band and the March Hare Band. An official ceremony takes place at 6 p.m. and fireworks are planned to round out the evening. The fun concludes at 10:45 p.m. Chalmers Park is located at 11400-76A Ave., North Delta.

It was announced earlier this month the federal government would provide $9,000 towards Canada Day events in Delta.

"With this funding, our government is honouring its commitment to strengthen our communities and to increase public awareness about our history and heritage. I invite British Columbians from across the Lower Mainland to come out and take part in these events celebrating our pride, our values and our accomplishments," Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay said at the time.
