SPECIAL EVENTS

Everyone is invited to hear Dr. Glyn Williams-Jones talk about volcanoes in B.C., specifically Mt. Meager and Tseax, both of which have erupted in the past. There are also other volcanoes in B.C., all of which need to be monitored and studied so we can be ready when the next one erupts. The event will be held at Cedar Park Church on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 10:30 a.m. and is free to ElderCollege Delta members. Membership in $10 for the year and can be purchased at the door.

 

The Point Roberts Fire Department presents its Spook-Tacular Haunted House and Social on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 230 Benson Rd. There will be a haunted house for zombies young and old, monster fire trucks and other super scary fire equipment on display, treats for goblins or any age and many more surprises. Come as you are, costumed or not.

 

Vandula Farms presents its Pumpkin Patch Festival on Oct. 26 and 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. The event features U-pick pumpkins, a wagon hayride, bouncy castle, face painting, games, Halloween displays, farm market, refreshments, photo-ops, plant sale and a pumpkin contest. Vandula is located at 9832 Ladner Trunk Rd.

 

Family Fright Fest takes place on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ladner Community Centre, McKee Seniors Recreation Centre and area. Haunted house, trick or treating, face painting, crafts, games and more.

 

Ladner Baptist Church is hosting its annual Harvestfest Carnival on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Early admission for kids with different abilities starting at 6 to 6:45 p.m. and general admission from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. Games to play, prizes and treats to be won. Admission: $2. An evening of dialogue about the overdose crisis and naloxone training will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harris Barn in Ladner. Learn how the overdose crisis is affecting our community. Ages 15+.

CLUBS AND GROUPS

 

Delta Community Living Society is hosting a workshop for families supporting people with developmental disabilities on Transitions from School to Adulthood. Low Vision Support Group meets at the Ladner Pioneer Library from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the third Monday of most months. Upcoming meeting dates: Nov. 18 (Tactile Creativity) and Dec. 16 (social).

 

All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner hosts a free monthly community meal at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

 

The Canadian Federation of University Women South Delta meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen at 7:15 p.m. The next meeting is on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Membership is open to women to come together with other like-minded women to improve the status of women, and to promote human rights, public education, social justice and peace. A university degree is not required. Join to discuss important current issues, hear a variety of speakers and take part in special interest groups. Mental Health Resiliency Support Group offered by Canadian Mental Health Association welcomes anyone who lives with a mental illness/mental health problem such as anxiety or depression. The group provides a safe environment to share your struggles and triumphs. Peer facilitators lead the group, provide support and educate on topics that help members to cope and move forward in an encouraging way. Group meets twice a month on Thursdays in the Ladner office. The Tsawwassen Order of Old Bastards (TOOBs) has been quietly helping many South Delta groups and individuals since 1984. The club's fundraising is done through food services at community events such as the Ladner Bandfest and the Tsawwassen Sun Festival. Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue Station 8 Delta is looking for men and women to join the all-volunteer group dedicated to saving lives on the waters around Delta. Do you enjoy knitting or crochet? Would you like to get together with like-minded people to share ideas, techniques and good conversation? Knit & Stitch is offered at all three Delta libraries. It runs Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Ladner Pioneer Library, Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at Tsawwassen Library and Fridays from 2 to 4 p.m. at George Mackie Library. Then join the Centre for Supportive Care’s drop-in, free Suicide Bereavement Alumni Group. Open to all communities. No commitment to attend every month. Free chronic conditions self-management workshop presented by UVic will be held at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre on Thursdays, Oct. 24 to Nov. 28, at 9:30 a.m.

ARTS

 

The Delta Music Makers is staging a multi-media "Concert of Remembrance" at Kinvillage on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. The afternoon show will include lighthearted, nostalgic music in the first half, while the second half is more reflective, in the spirit of Remembrance, with piper solo and audience singalong to old familiar songs. Refreshments served. Admission by donation.

 

The Happy Wanderers are looking for singers, any age, male and female, who would like to join the group for a “singalong” of old type group for seniors four times a month for one hour. Group will sing every Thursday at 2 p.m. Call Ann Baranszky at 604-940-0423.

 

Did you have fun playing in a band in high school? If so, dust off your instrument, contact Curt Jantzen, and then join us in Ladner Tuesday evenings.  The Delta Music Makers Concert Band is a fun group of adults who love to rehearse and play concerts in the community. Especially needed now are trumpets and clarinets, or any instrument except alto sax (that section is full). Contact [email protected].

 

Loades of Music daytime concert band has commenced a new season. Band rehearses Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Saviour Lutheran Church, 4737-57th St., Ladner. Registration fee is $50 per year. This year the band would like to add players to its brass section that play either trumpet or trombone.
