Delta Hospice Society’s annual Celebration of Life Tree is a meaningful seasonal tradition in Delta.

December can be one of the most difficult times of the year for those whose loved one has died or is unwell. It is a time when families gather and celebrate together. This may bring up painful memories of the person who is no longer present or able to join in the festivities.

For the past 25 years, the Delta Hospice Society has displayed a Celebration of Life Tree where the community is given the opportunity to honour and remember the life of someone who has died or to commemorate someone unwell.

A tribute card is available on which to write a person’s name and/or a special message, which is then placed on the tree or mantel. Another card may be taken home as a memento.

“Placing a tribute on the tree becomes symbolic of the love and memories that we carry in our heart, and helps us to remember the experiences we share or have shared,” said Nancy Macey, executive director of the Delta Hospice Society.

The community is invited to drop by the Centre for Supportive Care, (4631 Clarence Taylor Cres., Ladner) from Dec. 3 to 31 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Centre volunteers will be present to listen to people who wish to share memories. Helpful information about grief and loss, and how to cope with the holidays is also available at no cost.

Donations in memory of a loved one are always appreciated and go towards extending care to others; they are not required.
