It’s only been around for a little over a year but Delta is going to update its Social Action Plan.
Two years ago, the city’s first detailed social profile was released, a comprehensive document outlining all the services provided in Delta and what’s still missing. It was undertaken by Gillian McLeod, who was appointed to the newly created role of social planner.
From the profile, Delta’s Social Action Plan was developed a year later. The actions recommended were reviewed by Delta staff and community service agencies, and work plans were drawn up.
A recent memo to Delta council from Mel Cheesman, director of corporate services, notes some significant progress has been made in raising the profile of social issues in Delta.
“However, these plans are not static and need to be reviewed and updated regularly to reflect changing demographics and a changing social landscape,” he noted.
Council has directed staff to bring forward to its business plan workshop information on current service contracts that Delta has with social services providers and provide an overview of social service funding to help determine priority issues and funding strategies.
In preparation for the workshop, the city is holding a meeting of key social service providers to get their feedback on the plan, service gaps, changing needs and future trends. That session take place at the Harris Barn on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
It’s anticipated that representatives from more than 40 groups will be in attendance.
The largest providers of social services in Delta include the City of Delta, Deltassist, Delta School District and the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast B.C.
