When was the last time you took a stroll through a beautiful public garden or simply stepped outside to really appreciate your own?

June 15 is National Garden Day, a Canada-wide initiative to recognize and celebrate the vital role of gardens and gardening in our communities.

The picturesque Earthwise Garden is using National Garden Day to kick off its Garden Days Celebration that will run from June 15 to 23. The celebration will highlight Canada’s garden culture, history and innovations, and acknowledge the importance of public and private gardens, the value of home gardening and the promotion of environmental stewardship.

We all know that gardening or simply just being in a natural outdoor setting can be therapeutic. Walking in or tending to a garden is not only good exercise, but it offers the soul a sense of renewal as well, improving the mood and calming the senses.

The Earthwise Garden is in full bloom, so now is the perfect time to come for a tour and discover new ways to appreciate the value of gardens in our daily lives.

A walk through the lush, meandering paths at the Earthwise Garden offers an escape from the modern world and a gentle reminder of nature’s power and beauty. The garden is an inviting community gathering place that models sustainable gardening practices and demonstrates that it is possible to have a healthy, beautiful landscape without the use of pesticides.

Community gardens like Earthwise are especially valuable because they provide important habitat corridors for local wildlife in the midst of urban settings.

For those who don’t have a garden of their own, or are looking for a way to give back to the community while getting outdoors and exercising your green thumb, ask about how you can get involved as a volunteer at the Earthwise Garden.

Earthwise hosts volunteer drop-in sessions on Mondays and Thursdays. Meet others who share an interest in gardening and work as a group to help keep the garden looking beautiful. Call 604-946-9828 to learn more about volunteer opportunities.

The Earthwise Garden is located at 6400-3rd Ave. in Boundary Bay.
