Heritage Celebration so big it needs two weeks

Activities, open houses, awards and more

There is lots to do during the Corporation of Delta's Heritage Celebration.

Running from Feb. 13 to 26, the heritage celebrations will take place for the first time over a two-week period instead of just one week.

Activities include the Delta Heritage Hunt where participants can win great prizes. To join, visit Delta's social media pages. For more information, visit delta.ca/heritage.

Also taking place will be demonstrations including net mending, weaving, spinning/knitting and cedar weaving. Delta's website has dates and locations.

Details about a children's colouring contest are also available on Delta's website.

On Saturday, Feb. 18, there will be an open house at Trinity Lutheran Church, 11040 River Rd., from noon to 4 p.m. It will be an opportunity to tour one of Delta's oldest churches.

The Cammidge House in Boundary Bay Regional Park will play host to a tea and heritage displays from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26.

A highlight of heritage celebrations will be the presentations of heritage awards by Mayor Lois Jackson at the Feb. 20 regular meeting of Delta council.

The Heritage Advisory Commission selects recipients for Delta's Heritage Award of Merit and Friends of Heritage Award annually.

The commission accepts nominations for the awards throughout the year to be presented the following year.

A Heritage Award of Merit is conferred to projects, individuals or groups for conserving a valuable part of Delta's history. Awards may be granted to urban or rural projects in the area of preservation, restoration, rehabilitation or adaptive re-use and may be considered for their exterior or interior characteristics.

A Friends of Heritage Award is conferred to a project, individual or group that promotes heritage conservation and awareness in the areas of education, publication or advocacy.

Meanwhile, from Feb. 13 to May 26, applications will be accepted for the $1,000 Delta Heritage Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school student residing in Delta.

It is provided in an effort to encourage students to display an interest in local or regional heritage, as demonstrated through an original piece of work.
