The Ice Jam trio will start off Benediction Lutheran Church's new jazz services Sunday.

The trio is comprised of Peter Weber (bass), David Morse (piano) and Christine Anton (vocals).

"I think the musical component of the whole church life here is huge," says Anton, who is also choir director at the Tsawwassen church. "We're very proud of it. We would like to share it more with the larger community."

She says it could perhaps eventually transition into a jazz vespers series.

"We'll start with this and see how it goes and how

the congregation responds and then how the community responds," says Anton, who's enjoyed an extensive career in opera and musical theatre.

The idea is for jazz services to be offered every month with a fifth Sunday. Upcoming dates are June 29, Aug. 31 and Nov. 30. Weber notes other musicians from the community could be invited to perform.

He performed with the Kitchener/Waterloo Symphony Orchestra along with various dance bands and jazz groups in Ontario before moving to B.C. Weber says he and Morse started playing music together in late 1990s while Anton joined them in 2003.

Morse, who studied music at UBC, is a pianist and organist at Benediction Lutheran.

The first jazz service will be Sunday at 10 a.m. at Benediction Lutheran Church, 5575-6th Ave., Tsawwassen.
