Mamas for Mamas Delta is hosting a free fall swap this Saturday, Sept. 7 at Cedar Park Church in Ladner.

A grassroots community swap is starting to gain a foothold here in South Delta.

Started in Kelowna, the non-profit Mamas for Mamas organization has recently expanded to include other chapters across Canada, including Delta.

Mamas for Mamas supports mothers through community sharing, providing resources to mothers in need and filling the gaps in resources.

The group connects through a Facebook page designated to sharing resources and items. Moms are welcome to ask for things they need, give things they no longer use or trade for things. No cash is allowed to exchange hands as kindness is the currency.

“I started following this group and saw what they were doing and I contacted them telling them that I was willing to volunteer and get something going here,” said volunteer resources coordinator Anna Carr. “I met with them in February and we started something here. (It was) very grassroots through Facebook.”
Their first free clothing and household item swap was held in the spring in Ladner and 100 people attended, she said.

“I had no expectations for the first one. We just started advertising in the local Facebook groups and had almost 100 people show up,” she said.

The next free swap is taking place this Saturday, Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cedar Park Church (5300-44th Ave.). All clothing and household donations are welcome. You do not have to bring anything to participate or take items.

“We have more than 220 people interested in the event, so we will see what happens,” she said. “As this movement grows so does our capability to help mothers and families who are in need. The most exciting thing to do is that things from the Kelowna office have been given to us to give out to the moms locally and now those moms are now giving back. It just feeds that pass it forward movement.”
