Ladner resident Wenny Lai has started a crowd funding campaign for Sugarbear, a homeless Vancouver rescue dog who needed eye surgery. Lai, who works downtown, befriended the dog and his owner, who wasn’t able to afford the operation. The funds will also go to post-medical fees, dog food and grocery gift cards for the owner. Sugarbear has undergone the surgery and stayed at Lai’s home during the first few days of recovery. “Although we can’t stop homelessness overnight, we can become someone’s sign of hope within a moment. Whether it’s buying them food, listening to their story or setting up fundraisers - these actions are chances to guide and support a huge portion of our society to get out of the situation they’re in, whatever it may be,” Lai says in an email to the Optimist. The campaign can be found online at https://www.gofundme.com/surgery-for-sugarbear.
