One word can change life

January is more than half over already. How many of your New Year's resolutions are still in play? There is something about the new year that begs us to try to change. We know we can do better, and a fresh year seems like a great time to start.

January is more than half over already. How many of your New Year's resolutions are still in play? There is something about the new year that begs us to try to change. We know we can do better, and a fresh year seems like a great time to start. However, resolutions often lack the strength to facilitate real life change.

A year ago, someone from our church gave me a book, One Word that will change your life, by Jon Gordon, Dan Britton and Jimmy Page. They suggest that focusing on one word for the year can be more powerful than trying to keep a list of resolutions. I tried this last year, along with several others from our congregation, and we are doing it again this year.

A few examples from last year were: renew, passion, create, forward, forgive, refocus, fearless, unclutter and listen.

Interested? Here's how to find your one word for 2017: 1. Prepare your heart: Look In Unplug. Get away from noise and distractions, look inward, quiet your mind and really listen to your heart. Then ask yourself these three questions: What do I need? What's in my way? What needs to go? 2. Discover your word: Look Up Now that your heart is ready, it's time to plug in and listen up. You never know when, where and how your word will be revealed to you.

Ask God to reveal your word to you with this simple question: "What do you want to do in me and through me this year?" Write down what comes to your heart.

I hope you find this helpful.
