Seminar to help women master menopause

Doctor and personal trainer combine to offer free session later this month in Tsawwassen
A local personal trainer and a naturopathic doctor have teamed up to help women master menopause.

Mastering Menopause is a free seminar hosted by Dr. Heli McPhie of The Village Clinic in Tsawwassen and PJ Wren, a personal trainer and over-40 fitness expert. They are offering the session later this month to educate women on the latest news and research in women’s health to help them conquer menopause because, they believe, with the proper health plan in place women can feel energetic, vibrant and healthy again.

The session will cover a number of topics, including how fitness can help master menopause; what type of exercise every woman over the age of 40 should be doing; how to fight belly fat; the one exercise to do every day to prevent disease; what happens when hormones are used to help manage the symptoms of menopause; and estrogen, heart health and cancer risk.

Perimenopause, also known as the menopausal transition, typically begins sometime in your 40s but some women can start noticing changes in as early as their mid-30s. A woman doesn’t officially reach menopause until there have been 12 months without menstruation.

Symptoms of menopause and perimenopause range from menstrual irregularities, anxiety, dry skin, fatigue, bloating, headaches, hot flashes, insomnia, loss of concentration, mood swings, night sweats and weight gain — all of which can be aggravated by poor lifestyle choices.
Mastering Menopause runs Thursday, Feb. 25 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at The Village Clinic (7–1363-56th St.)
