Sidekick searching for five actors

Theatre group to hold auditions

The Sidekick Players are thrilled to be remounting Waiting for the Parade by John Murrell.

It was Sidekick's second production in 1998 and went on to win Theatre B.C.'s Vancouver Zone Festival and then picked up several awards at Theatre B.C.'s Mainstage Festival.

Set in Calgary during the Second World War, five women gather to work for the war effort while their men are away. Geographically, the conflict may have been remote, but it still impinged on individual lives.

The important story is how the women of Canada kept the home fires burning in spite of doubt, loneliness and pain.

Director Carroll Lefebvre has a close connection to the play and the story it tells as her mom (who still resides in Ontario) was one of these women. Her dad went off to war shortly after they were married and came home three years later, a different man but even more deeply in love with his "bride."

Lefebvre grew up with many stories from them both about "the best of times and the worst of times."

The search is on for the perfect five actors to portray the wonderful women Murrell created.

Auditions will be held in the Sidekick rehearsal hall at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre on Monday, Dec. 9 and Tuesday, Dec. 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. both nights.

Callbacks, if necessary, will be on Monday, Dec.16.

Rehearsals will commence Feb. 11, 2014. Production dates are March 27 to April 12 at the arts centre.

The cast includes: Catherine is in her 30s with a husband overseas.

Janet is in her late 30s with a husband that did not serve (she also plays the piano).

Margaret is in her late 50s with sons overseas.

Eve, in her 20s, is a school teacher and married to an older man who did not serve.

Marta is in her 30s and is a German living in Canada.
