Southpointe Academy students are preparing to stage The Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder next week.

The play is a farce and has the trappings of that style with men who dress like women, misadventures, hidden identities and broad, stock characters, notes director and Southpointe drama teacher Greg Kean.

"The interesting part for this one is trying to get the kids to buy into this style. It's sort of a different genre than they're accustomed to," he says.

The story, set in the 1880s, follows a matchmaker Dolly (played by Srishity Dhesi) along with her foil Horace (played by Bruce Cran) who's manipulated and cajoled into marriage.

Kean says he picked The Matchmaker to give a creative and talented group of Grade 12 students a nice swan song.

"The six of them have been really integral in the drama department since they've been here."

The Matchmaker will be staged at Southpointe Academy on Thursday, Jan. 30, Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $10 and are available at the school. Call 604-948-8826 to reserve.
