Health Canada recalls Thomas & Friends toy trains for ingestion hazards

Here's what you should do if you bought one of the wooden toy train cars
Two wooden toy train cars are being recalled for ingestion hazards.

Health Canada has issued a recall for two Thomas & Friends toy train cars due to ingestion hazards.

Two Wooden Railway Troublesome Trucks, one with crates and one with paint, contain a plastic connector with a high-powered magnet that may come off and be ingested by children of all ages.

The recall is jointly issued by Health Canada, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission and Mattel Canada.

The product numbers, HBJ89 and HBJ90, can be found on the underside of each train car. For those purchased on, consumers can also refer to their Amazon Standard Identification Numbers B09P4J9N5J and B09P4G581J.

Swallowing small, powerful magnets can pose "serious and potentially life-threatening risks," said Health Canada.

Multiple magnets swallowed within a short period of time can attract each other while moving through the intestines, causing the intestines to twist and create blockages or tearing of the intestinal walls.

Approximately 1,097 units of the affected products were sold in Canada from October to December 2022.

The company has received one report of the plastic connector detaching from the toy in the U.S. but has not heard of any injuries in Canada and U.S.

What you should do

Consumers are asked to immediately stop using the recalled products and contact Mattel to return the toy train cars for a full refund.

Mattel can be contacted by toll-free telephone at 1-855-853-6224  from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or through its company website.

Recalled products may not be redistributed, sold or given away in Canada pursuant to the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act.

Consumers are asked to report any health or safety accidents related to the use of this product or any other consumer products or cosmetics by filling out Health Canada's Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
