Being recognized as a finalist for a Woman of Worth Award was humbling for Ladner’s Simran Walia.

Walia was up for the WOW of Spirit Success and Soul honour.

“Making solo parenting work, having a successful career and making time to serve the community and follow my dreams is how I would describe my life in few words and being appreciated and recognized with this nomination was a humbling experience,” she said in an email to the Optimist.

The awards ceremony was held last month at the Sheraton Guildford.

“Every woman who is breaking barriers and pursuing her goals and dreams despite all odds is worth celebrating and being in the company of so many such accomplished women was a heartwarming experience and very motivating to say the least,” Walia said.

Walia ran for city council in the last civic election. Her submitted bio to the Optimist had noted she’s a Ladner Rotary member, volunteers on two city committees, was one of the organizers of the first Pride picnic in Delta, and is an IT manager by profession working in Richmond.

The awards were originally created to support the collaboration, celebration, connection and empowerment of women.
