ElderCollege Delta welcomes the return of educator and writer Peter Johnson to discuss his latest book in the first of three special presentations during the spring semester.

A Not So Savage Land: The Art and Times of Frederick Whymper is a biography of a painter and sketcher who, among other things, painted and drew B.C. as the official artist for Western Union Telegraph Company in the 1860s, before the use of the camera.

The presentation will be held on Saturday, March 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at Cedar Park Church in Ladner.

It is free to current ElderCollege Delta members and $10 to those who have not yet signed up. Membership includes two other free special sessions.

Whymper's artistic interpretations of this region, his journals and his stories are absolutely astounding. Many detailed accounts of B.C. and the Yukon at the time of settlement and great technological change will be shared.

Whymper's drawings and paintings of native life and early coastal geography, before the mass arrival of European and American settlers, and his close relationship with all those he met along the way resulted in some fine visual accounts of genuine historical and ethnological importance.

Johnson, a popular presenter with ElderCollege Delta members, will also teach a single class, Writing a Short Story, on Thursday, March 14.
