Mark Glavina and Artists in the Village¹s Mary Ann Burrows are working together to bring a Grand Prix of Art event to Ladner. Artists will race against the clock during the competition, set for July 19 in Ladner Village.

On your mark. Get set. Go!

Artists will be racing against the clock in Ladner Village later this month in the first-ever Grand Prix of Art - Delta.

The event, presented by the Travellingbrush.com and hosted by Artists in the Village and the Corporation of Delta, takes place Sunday, July 19.

Up to 100 artists will be involved part in the plein air painting race. They¹ll be given a location somewhere in Ladner Village on the morning of the event.

"They have three hours to complete their painting that's inspired by the location," says Mark Glavina, who runs an annual Grand Prix of Art event in Steveston.

He and Artists in the Village, a non-profit society, are working together to bring the event to Ladner. He says the "timing was perfect" to bring a Grand Prix of Art to another community, noting it will still continue in Steveston as well.

Artists are judged on basically three criteria areas - capturing the spirit of the location, the creativity of the artwork and the technical handling of the medium they choose to work in.

Artists in the Village president/founder Mary Ann Burrows notes local businesses are supporting the event by sponsoring painting locations. Spots are spread out throughout the village.

"The last few weeks there's been a lot of artists practicing in the village," she says.

Once the three hours are up (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.), artists will bring theirnwork to the Ladner Community Centre and prepare them for display and adjudication. A lunch for artists and volunteers, catered by the Dancing Pig restaurant,
will be held in Memorial Park and will feature live music.

The public will be able to view the paintings, which will be for sale with 20 per cent going to Artists in the Village, at the community centre and also have the opportunity to cast a ballot in the People's Choice Award.

"It¹s interesting, in the five years we¹ve been doing it in Steveston, not once has the judged winner been the same as the people's choice," says
Glavina.

There will be awards for both adult and youth artists. The awards ceremony is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. and the exhibition will be open to the public from 3 to 6 p.m.

Finalists will also have their work on display at municipal hall for a week, he adds.

Organizers are also holding a photo essay contest where photographers are encouraged to document the entire event and submit five images.
