The University Women's Club of South Delta gave out its annual bursaries to seven local students last week.

Each year the club holds an event to raise money and then advertises in the spring for candidates for its bursaries. Winners are selected in early June and this year's recipients were presented with their cheques Sept. 25.

The high school winners of $1,000 each were Robyn Mitchell, a recent South Delta Secondary graduate who has gone on to travel and tourism related studies, and Allona Vallee, a Delta Secondary grad who has aspirations of becoming a doctor.

The $1,000 community bursaries were awarded to Christine Jerrett, Karyn Kraemer and Mackenzie Switzer. Anita Bedell was the winner of the $2,500 Laura Fowler Scholarship (UBC graduate studies student).

The University Women's Club of South Delta is a charitable organisation that raises funds to help support women's education in the community. It was established in 1966 and is one of 123 clubs in Canada.

Aside from fundraising, the group has many interest groups - bridge, gourmet, walking, book, travel - that meet at various times each month. The monthly meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 7: 15 p.m. at the Royal Oaks community centre. These meetings often have a featured speaker to which members of the community are invited.

This year one of the club's fundraisers is selling Cafe Femenino coffee, a project of women helping women. Women of Central/ South America and Africa grow, harvest and process their own high quality coffee organically.

The club hopes residents will support its endeavours to improve the lives of women in developing countries by purchasing this coffee. Call 604-952-7044 for more information.
