It will soon be Christmas-time and once again Delta Concert Band, an eclectic 40-member group of highly-skilled adult amateur musicians from throughout the Lower Mainland, is about to launch its latest Yuletide performance season.

This annual celebration of music amid mistletoe and holly begins at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26 at KinVillage, 5410 10th Avenue, in Tsawwassen, where the band will play a varied program of Christmas favorites and other toe-tapping tunes.

After that, DCB will join forces with the community’s other active concert band, the Delta Music Makers, for what has become an annual Christmas concert tradition which begins at 7:30 p.m., in Ladner Community Centre (4734 51st Street), on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

Then DCB’s Holiday performance season wraps up with a final concert at the new North Delta Arts Centre (11425 84th Avenue) on Tuesday, Dec. 13, with the downbeat set for 7:30 p.m.

Admission is by donation at all three concerts and the final two performances are sponsored by the City of Delta.

Not surprisingly, entertaining Delta residents during Christmas as well as year-round is certainly nothing new for DCB, which recently marked its 58th anniversary. That makes it one of B.C.’s oldest community concerts bands still performing today.

It was formed on Oct. 29, 1964 in Ladner by a small group of dedicated and community-minded musicians. And from its early days until today, the band always maintains a high standard in musical performance.

It also excels and prides itself at being able to play all types of music — swing, rock, classical, marches, musicals, movie scores or pops.

And while its members, who range in age from 18 to 90 years, come from a wide variety of occupations and professions, under Music Director Jim Tempest they quickly meld into a cohesive ensemble that consistently presents an entertaining repertoire that always has something for everyone.

Tempest joined Delta Concert Band as Musical Director in the fall of 2006 and has long been active as a professional musician and educator in the Lower Mainland.
