The Delta Music Makers have a pair of concerts coming up that will help celebrate their 40th anniversary. Optimist File

The well-known concert band, that started in humble beginnings in 1983, the Delta Music Makers Community Band, has not only performed more than 250 concerts in Delta, but also, has travelled the world.

To celebrate its 40 years, the Delta Music Makers Community Band is offering a concert at Genesis Theatre (next to Delta Secondary) on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m.

The same concert will be performed at Kinvillage in Tsawwassen, a week earlier on Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. Entry to both concerts is by donation; no tickets required. Everyone is invited, and former band members are especially welcomed.

In 1983 local band teacher Curt Jantzen offered a beginner course for adults through Delta Continuing Education. Fifteen people joined and enjoyed it so much that other people signed up, and eventually the band grew into the 55-piece Delta Music Makers that the community enjoys today. Amazingly, several of the original beginner-musicians are still playing with the group after 40 years!

The anniversary concert will have two themes.

First, the music will celebrate pieces that have been enjoyed by so many audiences over the 40 years. Secondly, the music will highlight long-time Delta Music Makers members, playing featured solos with band accompaniment.

Jantzen invited Margaret Behenna, long-time band teacher at Delta Secondary, to become the assistant conductor several years ago, and the group has matured under the professional guidance of these two conductors.

Audiences will be thrilled with many different genres of music: Broadway show-stoppers, exciting music from the movies, up-tempo concert marches, sophisticated solo features, stimulating ballads and folk music, plus full-band features that will knock your socks off! All of this will be enhanced by on-screen visuals that celebrate the musicians, the band’s travels, and many local events over the years.
