Deltans asked to capture Delta in photo contest

Winning submissions to be featured in museum exhibit

The magic of photographs is their ability to provide us with little pieces of our past.

They provide an opportunity to reminisce or tell stories about our home, the people in our lives, the things that are dear to us and of our surrounding landscapes. While our memories can only hold onto so much, photographs enable us to look back at our deep personal and collective histories.

Residents have captured Delta's rich history, beautiful scenery and memorable moments in photographic form for more than a century. To continue a tradition, on Oct. 22, the Delta Museum will bring some of the very best photographic memorabilia out of its archival vault and into its latest exhibit gallery.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the Delta Museum and Archives Society will be holding a photography contest to showcase the compositions of Deltans.

It invites all Delta residents to pick up their cameras and photograph what living in Delta means to them, and enter the photographs in the museum's second annual photo contest.

If you have a great photo that you wish to submit, visit www.deltamuseum.ca for instructions.

Winning photographs will be framed and featured in the gallery with the unveiling of the latest exhibit - A Delta Self Portrait: Photographs of Delta by Deltans.

"Each Deltan holds a unique version of their neighbourhood," says Jordana Kerry, curator for the Delta Museum. "This exhibit allows residents a chance to show how they view their city and participate in collecting a photographic archive for future generations."

Each winning photo will become part of the exhibit and will be displayed with the selected photographs from the archive collection. Once the exhibit finishes, all contest photographs submitted will become part of a special photographic collection that documents Delta in 2011.

And all the framed images, both from the collection and the contest winners, will be for sale after the exhibit closes.

The contest closes Oct. 21.
