The Delta Hospital Foundation has announced that Sarah Lockhart, a Grade 12 student at Delta Secondary, is the 2012 Robert T. Reynolds Memorial Scholarship recipient.
In a ceremony at the foundation office Monday, Lockhart, who had her parents in attendance, was awarded the annual scholarship. Georgina Reynolds, wife of the late Robert T.
Reynolds, also attended the presentation.
One of the Delta Centennial Hospital Society's first chairman and a member of a pioneer family, Robert T. Reynolds made outstanding contributions to the community and dedicated much of his time and energy towards obtaining a hospital for Delta.
His "call to arms" in 1976 for the residents of Delta to join the society, along with his dedication and perseverance in the face of many obstacles, were major factors in Delta Hospital becoming a reality.
Lockhart's dedication to Delta exemplifies Reynolds' perseverance for his community and her commitment to local and international organizations made her an ideal candidate for the scholarship.
She is the president of DSS' First Responders program, which provides first aid to the school and community. She spearheaded the BabyCakes for Molly fundraiser and has worked with the International Friendship Association and Camp Goodtimes to help children in Nicaragua and across Canada.
Lockhart has been accepted to study at the University of Alberta in the faculty of nursing after which she hopes to enter medicine.
"For longer than I can remember, I have dreamed of becoming a doctor after battling childhood cancer," she said. "Being in the hospital gave me the opportunity to meet some amazing nurses and doctors, and I really admire and appreciate what they do for others."
A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded annually in recognition of Robert T.
Reynolds' exemplary service to his community. The scholarship is open to all Grade 12 students residing in Delta that intend to undertake post-secondary education. An applicant's success is measured on their participation in extracurricular activities, community volunteerism and academic achievement.
