Conserve precious resource because it's not endless

Earthwise Society announced this week it has received $6,000 from Vancity toward its Rain Harvest program.

The program aims to raise awareness about water cycles and climate change and show residents how they can help by conserving, collecting and re-using water.

At times, water may seems like an endless resource and water use in Canada has increased over the last two decades. However, with climate change, summer drought and winter storms expected to increase in severity in coming years, that means less water in the summer when we need it most, and a greater risk of flooding during the winter.

Earthwise's Rain Harvest program aims to get people thinking about the value and fragility of our fresh water supplies. It will include demonstrations of landscape techniques to

conserve, collect and re-use water in residential settings.

Techniques such as increasing areas of vegetation and installing rain gardens can help capture rainwater and promote groundwater recharge. A single rain garden has the potential to soak up thousands of gallons of polluted runoff to protect our waterways and help us better

meet our landscape water requirements during the summer.

Over the coming months, Earthwise Society will be training volunteers on rain harvesting to help with outreach and education. To learn more contact [email protected], call 604-946-9828 or visit the farm and garden at 6400-3rd Ave. in Boundary Bay.
