Imperial Hobbies in Richmond has joined Free Comic Book Day which will take place on Saturday.

Comic book lovers and those interested in learning more about them have a chance to get free comic books this Saturday.

For the first time, the Richmond Public Library is participating in Free Comic Book Day, an annual initiative by the North American comic book industry to attract new readers to independent comic book stores.

Free Comic Book Day is observed on the first Saturday of May, which falls on May 4 this year. People can stop by Richmond libraries for a chance to receive a free comic book.

"Brighouse, Cambie and Ironwood will also be offering a superhero-themed storytime and there will be crafts and movies running at Brighouse," said Richmond Public Library's social media account.

Only one comic book per person is allowed and because supplies are limited, they are on a first-come first-serve basis, according to the library.

Imperial Hobbies, a 5,500-sq.ft. hobby shop on Sea Island, is the only private store in Richmond that is participating in this year's Free Comic Book Day.

The store said on its social media account it has a small selection of comic books to give away on the day.

"It's a way for new readers to be exposed to the ever-expanding world of graphic novels and comic books, for all ages and interests," reads the post.
