Claire Pollock (front row centre) is directing The Portal’s first theatre performance tomorrow in Ladner with Hansel and Gretel and Other Tales.

The Portal's first-ever theatrical performance takes place tomorrow with Hansel and Gretel and Other Tales.

"It's a little bit spooky.

It's a lot of fun folklore," says director Claire Pollock, adding the show is definitely centered around the Halloween theme and is still family-friendly.

The other folklore tales include The Deer Woman and Dicey & Orpus.

The four cast members involved in the performance are all new, local actors, Pollock notes. Drummers and dancers will perform as well.

Preparations for the production began a month ago, she says.

"It's been a lot of fun. It's definitely cool to work with a big variety of people. It's very interesting to get everyone's take on [things]. They're all new actors ... so it's fun. The different questions they have are interesting."

The audience will tour around through The Portal, a community space, creative arts gallery and herbal apothecary in Ladner, during the show, Pollock notes. Pollock started acting at Delta Secondary before continuing her studies at Douglas College and then travelling to Wales for a bachelor's degree. This will be her third time directing a play.

The Portal is located at 4755-51st St., Ladner. Show times are 2, 3 and 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.

Reserve tickets by visiting The Portal or by emailing Pollock at [email protected]. Tickets will be first come, first serve at the door as seating is limited.

Admission is by donation.

There will be a concession with vegan baked goods and hot chocolate.
