Getting into the holiday spirit

Lots of Christmas-themed shows and attractions lined up in South Delta

What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than a little festive entertainment? Here’s a list of some local upcoming attractions.

• The Delta Music Makers have three special concerts over the holiday season.

“This year we have a special treat for the South Delta community as we perform three Christmas concerts in preparation for the recording of a Christmas CD to be available in 2015,” says band leader Curt Jantzen. “We have an exciting lineup of songs that will put everyone in the Christmas mood — featuring several medleys of Christmas favourites to classics such as Ukrainian Bell Carol and Gesu Bambino.”

The first concert takes place at All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. Admission is free. The second takes place at McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre in Ladner on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. Admission, including wine and cheese, is $3 for members and $5 for non-members. The third performance is set for Sunday, Dec. 14 at KinVillage in Tsawwassen at 2 p.m. Admission is by food donation.

• Delta Choral Society presents Come and Sing of Christmas featuring Delta Community and Tapestry choirs with special guests. Concerts are Saturday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 7 at 3 p.m. at Cedar Park Church, 5300-44th Ave., Ladner. Check www.deltachoral.ca for tickets.

• The December edition of the Songwriter Café at St. David’s Anglican Church, 1115-51A St., Tsawwassen, has a featured theme of Songs about Christmas. Anyone who has an original song or an original arrangement of a Christmas tune is welcome to share it. People who want to perform can show up between 7 and 7:30 p.m. Performers get in free.

The event is Saturday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. Admission for non-performers is $10.

• Bring on the Christmas spirit and join Cedar Park at its eighth annual music and dessert evening on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. The evening will be filled with beautiful Christmas carols and desserts. Carolyn Arends will be entertaining the crowd with songs from her new Christmas album Christmas — The Story of Stories.

“We are so excited to have Carolyn join us for our music and dessert evening. She has so much to share with us and we feel blessed that her busy schedule permits her to join us and share her passion for the gospel,” says Lee Kosa, lead pastor at Cedar Park Church.

Cedar Park is pleased to be community partners with the Delta Hospice Society again this year and proud to be able to directly impact the programs and services offered by the society through gifting the proceeds from this Christmas event.

• Linda Kidder and Dave Pickell will be at Genesis Theatre in Ladner on Friday, Dec. 5 for a live@5005 Festive Season Concert. Doors are at 7 p.m. and the show is set for 8 p.m. Admission is $15.

• There will be a Christmas concert at the Ladner Community Centre on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. with the NDSS concert band, DSS senior band, Ladner Elementary choir and the Delta Concert Band. Admission is free with a donation to the food bank.

• The World Sings Christmas with the Richmond Orchestra & Chorus Association chorus is at All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, $15, are available at the church office and Grapes 4 U in Ladner.

• The Wonderchoir children’s choir is hosting a short concert of the songs it has been working on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children.

• The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s Traditional Christmas comes to South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m. The performance is led by VSO associate conductor Gordon Gerrard with music by the VSO, seasonal readings by Christopher Gaze as well as beautiful voices from the UBC Opera Ensemble and Enchor. • KinVillage Community Centre, 5430-10th Ave., Tsawwassen, has quite a lineup of entertainment throughout the holiday season.
Tonight the Mighty Fraser Big Band will provide the dance music and dance only tickets are available at the door after 8 p.m. for just $18.  

On Saturday, Dec. 5, open to everyone 21 and up, grab your “ugly Christmas sweater” and dance to the music of the DieHards band. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $14 for members and $18 for non-members
At the Christmas luncheon on Friday, Dec. 12, entertainer George Ellenton, “Frankly Yours” will sing the songs of Frank Sinatra. Tickets are $12 for members and $14 for non-members. Lunch will be served at 12:15 p.m.  

On Saturday, Dec. 13, Shari’s Saturday Social will be a Christmas Extravaganza with wonderful CD music to dance to. Tickets, available at the door, are $12 for members and $14 for non-members. Doors open at 7 p.m., dancing 7:30 to 11 p.m. Free mid-evening goodies will be available to nibble on. If you wish to reserve a table, call Shari at 604-943-8755 by Dec. 11.

• McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre presents a free Christmas concert with Free Flight School of Dance, the McKee Tappers, featured vocalist Kristen Watz and a Christmas Sing-A-Long on Friday, Dec. 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. Donations for the food bank will be accepted.

The centre also has a Christmas lunch planned for Dec. 25 at 11:30 a.m. It costs $5 for members and $10 for guests. Tickets are at the customer service desk.
