Delta's Ornicha Srimokla was among 48 students from across B.C. to have her outstanding efforts recognized with a Coast Capital Savings Education Award this year.

Srimokla was awarded the credit union's Citizenship Award valued at $2,000 for her achievements in juggling school, personal activities and community involvement.

In addition to her outstanding academic performance, Srimokla is passionate about giving back to her community, both locally and abroad.

Srimokla volunteers at Delta Hospital, tutors elementary students in math and works as a doctor's assistant every summer in underdeveloped parts of Thailand. In addition to her volunteer work, Srimokla founded a charity, Universal Help Connect, to help underprivileged youth in Thailand.

"This is a wonderful way to kick off the start of a new school year," said Srimokla, who is studying science at UBC. "It is exciting to be recognized by an organization that shares my passion and commitment for community."

Wendy Lachance, director of community leadership for Coast Capital Savings, said the credit union received nearly 1,000 award applications this year from across the province.

This year Coast Capital Savings presented 48 awards totalling $144,000 to deserving students from across B.C.
