Locals make Selects touring teams

Five Delta field lacrosse players named to Burnaby Mountain summer rosters

Five Delta field lacrosse players have been named to the summer rosters of the Burnaby Mountain Selects touring teams.

Burnaby Mountain is fielding four travel teams this summer: U13 Elite (1998, 1999 born), U15 Elite (1996, 1997 born), Junior Elite (1995 born/ grad 2013) and Senior Elite (grad 2011, 2012). In total, over 80 student-athletes from 22 communities across B.C. and Washington state are representing the Selects at top tournaments in Colorado, Maryland and New York.

South Delta Secondary students Spencer Achtymichuk (midfield) and Scott McQuarrie (defender) are members of the Selects Senior Elite squad. Delview's Shawn Richardson is member of the U15 Elite team, while Seaquam's Denis Clarke is playing goal for the Junior squad. Rounding out the Delta contingent is midfielder Eric Kalmback with the U13 squad.

The U15 and U13 squads recently returned from University of Denver Team Camp in Colorado. Both teams produced 5-2 records, while Richardson was chosen to participate in the U15 all-star game.

Over 30 college coaches attended this year's University of Denver Team Camp, including coaches from NCAA Division I powerhouses Denver, Hofstra, Towson and UMass.

Over the course of the summer season, the Selects practice on-field twice a week, with an additional three hours of weekly study hall for high school aged student-athletes until the end of the school year.

Founded in 2006, the Burnaby Mountain Selects program is designed to follow the same collegiate template as the Simon Fraser University men's lacrosse program, with the objective of preparing young student-athletes to play at the collegiate level.

The Selects Senior Elite team will conclude the 2011 summer season with a trip to Baltimore, Maryland, July 19 to 26 to compete in the nationally renowned Champ Camp.
