Long weekend clinic needs blood donors

Canadian Blood Services is urging Delta residents to rally together to support hospital patients in need by donating blood at the community's blood donor clinic this weekend.

Blood is needed every minute of every day at hospitals across Canada, even on long weekends. While trauma cases, such as car accidents, are typically associated with long weekends, other needs for blood are in high demand too - cancer treatments, heart surgery and transplant procedures.

"Hospitals need blood year-round. Life doesn't stop for doctors, nurses and, especially patients, just because it's a long weekend," says Jan Hawkins, donor services manager for Canadian Blood Services.

"Therefore, we can't stop collecting blood around long weekends. We're asking those who are staying in town to please donate blood for those in need."

The blood donor clinic is set for Sunday, July 31 at the North Delta Recreation Centre, 11415-84th Ave., from 9: 30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

One hundred appointments are still open.
