Looking beyond the first year of grief

Often when we are bereaved, we think about looking for grief support in the early months after someone close to us has died.

Often when we are bereaved, we think about looking for grief support in the early months after someone close to us has died.

We may want to understand the vast range of reactions we are having, learn ways of supporting ourselves while grieving or meet other people also experiencing this significant change.

Sometimes after a year or more, our questions and needs may change.

While we are familiar with periodic waves of grief, we may start to have questions about what moving on means, and about how we can incorporate and make sense of this loss within the wider scope of our lives.

The Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner is hosting Beyond the First Year, a six week series, starting July 24 for widows and widowers who are looking for an opportunity to

speak with other individuals experiencing similar grief.

Topics will include: looking at current grief challenges, identifying one's personal mourning style (what helps and hinders) considering one's goals with respect to adjusting to being widowed, examining the effects of loss on one's social life and identifying ways of moving on.

The series will take place Thursdays from July 24 to Sept. 7. For more information about this series or other programs offered by the Delta Hospice Society, call Margaret Fletcher at 604-948-0660.
