South Delta Artists’ Guild has kicked off 2015 with more than spring in its paintbrushes.

In January the guild and Southpointe Academy presented Anticipation, a challenging and highly successful creative writing and art show that drew many visitors to Gallery 1710.

Also in January, Mayor Lois Jackson announced the grand prize winner of Delta’s street banner contest is Victoria (Vicky) Heryet, a leading Ladner artist and long-time member of the guild, whose evocative and beautiful banners representing the four seasons are already hanging in Tsawwassen and Ladner.

Love of Beauty is the theme of paintings now on display at Gallery 1710 through Feb. 22. They include work in oil, acrylic, watercolour, mixed media and collage, all expressing beauty as seen by the individual artist.

There’s an old saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so how can beauty be defined? One thought is that it’s a combination of qualities giving pleasure to mind or senses, through harmony of form, colour, proportion, authenticity and originality.

The exhibit is on view Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Guild workshops open to the public and for both beginning and experienced artists are the responsibility of workshop chair Coral Gurney, herself an internationally respected artist who understands the  needs of artists at all levels.

A full-house three-day workshop on Advanced Mixed Media Techniques was taught by Deb Chaney in January. Upcoming workshops include Chirigi-E and Collage with Roxsane Tiernan March 14 and 15; a three-day workshop mid-April on Design and Collage with Sandra Taylor and Linda Bell; and a six-day course by Marlene Strain on Watercolour: Beginner and Beyond, starting April 25 and running weekly through May.

Chirigi-E is an ancient and beautiful Japanese art form in which the primary technique uses coloured handmade paper torn to create art resembling watercolour painting. Tiernan is an internationally admired and world-travelled artist who studied Chirigi-E in Japan. Her work was hung (and sold) in the South Delta Artists’ Guild’s 2014 international Oil and Water competition at Gallery 1710. Cost of the course is $90 ($80 for guild members) plus $20 for specialty papers.
