The Delta Police Department wants to help local residents be prepared for any emergency.

Starting Oct. 1, the department, in conjunction with the municipality, the Delta Fire Department and the Delta school board, will be teaching a Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program.

The program aims to teach participants how to become personally prepared to take care of themselves for a minimum of 72 hours following a disaster.

"It will teach neighbours how to plan and train as a

neighbourhood to respond safely and effectively as organized teams during a disaster," said Sgt. Sarah Swallow.

Topics covered include: personal preparedness, utilities and fire suppression, transportation and communication, emergency first aid and leadership.

The course costs $30 and will run on Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. starting Oct. 1 at the Delta Manor Education Centre in Ladner (4750-57th St.).
