South Delta Artists’ Guild celebrate E.J. Hughes

Sea to Sky show opens March 31 at Gallery 1710

Mark your calendar for March 31 and plan to visit Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen for the Sea to Sky show inspired by B.C. artist E.J. Hughes.

Born in North Vancouver in 1913, Hughes captured strong, appealing images of landscapes and seascapes. Hughes settled in Duncan and painted all around Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. He used flattened spaces, skewed perspective and simple shapes with great clarity and appreciation. His paintings are unique.

It is always a surprise to see what our local South Delta Artists Guild members conjure up with using a Canadian icon such as Hughes as their muse.

The land, sea, animals and people make for compelling images.

The formal opening of the show is Saturday, April 1 and has an added bonus at 1 p.m. senior artist Geoff Hacker will be on hand to answer any questions about Hughes’ life, accomplishments, and his appeal to other famous artists, such as Jack Shadbolt. Books and memorabilia will be on display and light refreshments will also be served.

In other news, the Guild is committed to having an “artist on location” for its shows.

On April 15, Diane Atkey will be on hand painting in acrylic, and Gillian Olson will show off her skills in botanical drawing depicting nature in pen, pencil and watercolor.

Both these artists are exceptional and well worth penciling into your calendar.

Gallery 1710 is open Friday to Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. and is located right beside the South Delta Rec. Centre on 56th Street.
